Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Nudlaghi Leadership Institute (NLI)? NLI is a statewide leadership organization rooted in Indigenous values and Alaska’s diverse histories, geographies, and communities. We bring people together to reflect, learn, and build relationships that strengthen Alaska for generations to come. Our programs include year round community based leadership offerings and a seasonal leadership camp at Silver Salmon Creek.

Who are these sessions for? Our camps serve leaders from across Alaska — nonprofit staff, educators, tribal and community leaders, public servants, business professionals, and people stepping into leadership for the first time. Some sessions are open enrollment; others are group bookings for teams or organizations. Sessions are facilitated by a mix of Indigenous leaders, Alaska leaders, and subject matter experts.

What is the summer leadership camp at Silver Salmon Creek? Each summer from July through early September, NLI hosts a series of leadership retreats at Silver Salmon Creek on the coast of Lake Clark National Park. Participants stay in a remote, stunning setting surrounded by mountains, glaciers, wildlife, and the traditional lands of the Ninilchik Native Association. Sessions vary in topic and facilitation style, but all focus on reflection, connection, and skill building.

How do I know if a session is a good fit? Your application responses help us understand your goals, your leadership context, and the cohort we’re building. We also use this information to ensure we’re reaching a broad cross section of Alaska and to plan for your safety, comfort, and full participation if you are admitted.

What is the daily schedule like? Each session is facilitated differently, but most days include a mix of structured conversations, reflective time, shared meals, and opportunities to explore the surrounding landscape. Evenings are generally relaxed, with time for connection, rest, or informal discussion.

What are the accommodations? Participants stay in shared cabins that sleep up to four individuals. Rooms are simple, clean, and cozy. Because the site is remote, amenities are limited compared to urban lodging, but the setting is extraordinary.

What are meals like at camp? We bring a camp chef to Silver Salmon Creek for each session. Meals are hearty, nourishing, and designed to support long days of learning and outdoor activity. We collect dietary needs during registration and do our best to accommodate them while working within the constraints of a remote site.

How do I get to camp? Participants travel by small plane from Anchorage. Weather can affect flight timing, so we ask participants to keep schedules flexible on travel days. NLI coordinates flights and provides detailed instructions once you are accepted.

What happens if weather prevents flying? Because access to camp depends entirely on safe flying conditions, all sessions are subject to weather related cancellation. If flying is not possible, the session will be canceled and all participant fees will be fully refunded. Participants and the facilitator are welcome to meet informally in Anchorage if they wish to use the scheduled time together; any such gathering would be optional and self organized.

What does it cost to attend? Sessions cost $1,650 per person. NLI offers scholarships using a tiered model to keep participation accessible for Alaskans from every region. Scholarships apply only to NLI tuition. Participants are responsible for airfare to Anchorage, lodging in Anchorage, and other personal travel expenses.

What should I know about wildlife and safety? Silver Salmon Creek is home to bears, eagles, and other wildlife. The lodge and NLI staff provide clear safety guidelines, and all participants receive an orientation upon arrival. Respect for the land and wildlife is a core part of the experience.

Do participants stay connected after camp? Many cohorts continue meeting informally after their session — sometimes for years. NLI encourages these peer networks but does not formally facilitate them.

When is the 2026 season? The 2026 camp season runs July 15 – September 6.

What is the weather like? Weather at Silver Salmon Creek changes quickly. Expect temperatures in the mid 40s to mid 60s, with sun, rain, and wind all possible in a single day.

What should I bring to camp? We ask all participants to pack light because flights to Silver Salmon Creek are weight restricted. After acceptance, you’ll receive a detailed packing list, but most people find these essentials especially helpful: •Warm layers (fleece, wool, or synthetic) •Waterproof jacket and pants •Quick dry clothing •Extra socks •Personal toiletries and medications •A reusable water bottle •Comfortable indoor shoes for the cabins

Is there electricity? Yes. Cabins and common areas have electricity for lighting and basic charging.

How does NLI handle safety? Staff are trained in remote safety, wildlife awareness, and emergency procedures. We maintain communication equipment and have protocols in place for weather, wildlife, and medical situations.

Can I fish during camp? You bet! If you plan to fish, you’ll need an Alaska fishing license. You can purchase one online before your trip. We’ll provide guidance in your pre trip materials. We have rods, lures and rubber boots at camp.
